Login.gov just keeps getting better
Login.gov is expanding, creating new ways for you to securely access government services online. This means more Americans can benefit from Login.gov, which is a safe and simple way to access government benefits and services while preventing fraud and safeguarding taxpayer funds. (GSA.GOV/BLOG October 18, 2023)
Over 70 million users have used Login.gov to access government benefits and services quickly, easily, and securely. In a recent announcement by GSA, it’s revealed that every Cabinet-level agency will soon be using Login.gov to enhance access to digital services, improve user security, and reduce identity and benefits-related fraud. (ibid)
In today’s digital world, people want to interact with their government in a smooth, secure, and private manner. Login.gov is operated by the U.S. Government, guaranteeing that your interactions are private and your personal information is protected by law, preventing it from being sold or used for unrelated purposes. (ibid)
Today, GSA is unveiling new identity verification methods that will be available next year. These methods adhere to strict security guidelines and offer both virtual and in-person options to verify your identity securely, using cutting-edge technology while ensuring your data remains safe. (ibid)
GSA is continually improving Login.gov to meet the diverse needs of users, making it accessible whenever and wherever you need it. Robust anti-fraud measures, such as photo ID checks and phone validation, have raised the bar on security, surpassing traditional identity verification methods. (ibid)
In the past year, Login.gov introduced 24/7 phone and email support in multiple languages. For those who prefer in-person verification, it partnered with the U.S. Postal Service to provide this service at over 18,000 Post Office locations nationwide. This ensures that over 99% of the U.S. population has a participating Post Office within 10 miles of their home. (ibid)
At the same time, Login.gov has introduced robust anti-fraud tools, similar to those used by private companies, to better detect and prevent fraudulent activities. These tools enhance the existing secure identity verification process, providing protection to both users and taxpayer dollars. (ibid)
Login.gov has proven to be a lifeline in times of need. For example, after the devastating Maui wildfires earlier this year, Hawaii’s Department of Labor teamed up with GSA and the U.S. Department of Labor to quickly deploy Login.gov. This ensured that those affected by the wildfires had 24/7 access to unemployment benefits while preventing fraudulent claims. (ibid)
Looking ahead, Login.gov is preparing to launch new identity verification pathways that adhere to strict standards. These offerings will complement its already robust anti-fraud measures, providing even stronger protection against advanced identity fraud and cyber threats. (ibid)
Ultimately, Login.gov will offer three ways to verify your identity securely:
- In-person verification at a local Post Office, with the vast majority of the U.S. population living within 10 miles of a participating Post Office.
- A digital identity verification option that doesn’t require automated facial matching, possibly through a live video chat with a trained identity verification professional.
- A digital identity verification option using proven facial matching technology to verify your identity without needing to speak to a professional or visit a Post Office. (ibid)
GSA, in partnership with agencies, will continue to gather evidence to evaluate the effectiveness of Login.gov across different demographic groups and ensure there’s no bias in identity verification. Additional verification pathways will also be explored to meet the unique security needs of agencies. (ibid)
Login.gov will continue investing in academic research to evaluate its performance across different demographics to maintain privacy. Its mission is to provide a secure and private way for people to interact with their government, ensuring equity and access. It operates transparently and will never allow data to be used for commercial purposes. (ibid)
In summary, Login.gov’s growth and features are aimed at protecting your security and privacy while providing seamless access to government services. It offers a variety of options to meet agency needs and aligns with the values of the Biden-Harris Administration, ensuring that the public has secure and seamless access to government services.
