A New Way In: Login.gov Adds Passport Verification for Faster, Safer Access
WASHINGTON — GSA announced that Login.gov now allows users to verify their identity with a U.S. passport, marking the first federal partnership to use authoritative government records for online verification. (General Services Administration Press Release August 20, 2025)
GSA’s Technology Transformation Services and the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs built this privacy-preserving solution. Users can capture their passport’s biographical page during the remote proofing process, and Login.gov will check against State’s passport records. (ibid)
“This is a major milestone for GSA and the federal government’s digital service ecosystem,” said Deputy Secretary of State for Management and GSA Acting Administrator Michael Rigas. “Login.gov is at the forefront of the Administration’s efforts to create efficiencies and combat fraud, and initiatives like this are a great example of doing both.” (ibid)
With over 170 million valid passports in circulation, this option expands access to millions of Americans. Login.gov currently supports more than 100 million user accounts across 50+ agencies. (ibid)
The rollout begins with passport books and will expand later this year to passport cards and in-person verification at participating post offices. (ibid)
